  • "Reconstruction to Ragtime Poster"

As a promotional poster for an interactive theatrical performance depicting the rise of racism in Reconstruction Era vaudeville theatre, this piece explores the delicate relationships between the vaudevillian actors and the racist archetypes they often portrayed. The strong use of "ink-blot like" outlines draw a comparison between the "black-face" make-up important to productions of the era as well, as the dirty connotation given to the practice today. The use of a woman’s silhouette to contrast with the frightening and cartoonish blackface character portrays this double persona, which led to the rise of racism.
